An article appeared recently in the Journal of Biological Chemistry entitled "Over Expression of the Cytosolic Form of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase (GTP) in Skeletal Muscle Repatterns Energy Metabolism in the Mouse." This transgenic animal is proof-in-principle of the notion that we can stop deleterious forms of aging in the very near future.

Case in point, the PEPCK-Cmus mice have the capability of running five to six kilometers at a speed of 20 meters per minute on a treadmill for up to six hours before stopping, which has been anthropomorphised to be metabolically similar to Lance Armstrong biking up the Pyrenees. Animal behavior studies later demonstrated that the PEPCK-Cmus mice are seven times more active in their home cages than controls, reproduce later in life at 2.5 years is about the reproductive equivalent of an 80 year old human but they were also markedly more aggressive, the reasons of which are not known, but the mice eat 60% more than normal mice, yet are thinner, fitter, longer lived and so far healthier.
